The Republic of Kazakhstan is a democratic and unitary state. State power is based on the principle of separating legislative, executive and judicial powers. Legislative power is exercised by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan which is the permanently acting highest representative body.
The Supreme Council is elected once in four years. It consists of two chambers headed by Chairmen of the two chambers: Senat and Majilis. The Chairman of Scnat is nominated by the President" Senat is formed by deputies elected from each region, the capital! and cities of national importance, also it includes 7 senators appointed by the President, the deputies are re-elected every two years.
The Chairman of Majilis is elected at the first session of the Council from among its members by a direct secret majority vote for the term of office. Each chamber functions independently. The right of legislative initiative belongs to deputies of Supreme Council, the Cabinet of Ministers and is implemented exiusively in Majilis.
The head of the state, its executive power, is the President. He is elected once in five years. The President cannot be re-elected more than one time nor he can be elected at the age of 65.
